The mission of the Physical Therapy Institute is to return patients to the highest level of function and wellness possible utilizing evidenced-based practice, compassion and outstanding service.

Individualized Care

Each patient at the Physical Therapy Institute is evaluated by clinical faculty to determine their individual needs and goals. Treatment plans are based on a thorough assessment of the underlying movement or neuromuscular problem. Each plan includes home exercises and instruction in functional activities to maximize the patient’s involvement in treatment. Manual therapy and exercise techniques are utilized to address the specific dysfunction identified in the evaluation. Our therapists treat one patient at a time to focus on your specific needs.

Services We Offer

The Physical Therapy Institute addresses many different conditions. Treatments include posture training, body mechanics, joint mobilization, strengthening, flexibility, pain reduction, coordination training, gait training, and correction of faulty movement patterns.

At the Physical Therapy Institute, we specialize in comprehensive care for a variety of conditions, including vertigo, temporomandibular joint dysfunction (TMD), falls, and more.

For individuals experiencing symptoms of vertigo or dizziness triggered by head movements or changes in position, our expert care includes a vestibular evaluation utilizing cutting-edge technology to provide optimal physical therapy treatment plans tailored to your needs. To address the common concerns about falls, our certified neurologic specialist and PT clinicians are equipped to treat dysfunction related to your fall risk and prevention.

For those experiencing temporomandibular joint dysfunction (TMD), our certified physical therapists use an individualized approach that targets pain reduction, jaw motion restoration, and symptom management, promoting improved quality of life.

Treatment is individualized and available in-person at the Physical Therapy Institute or through telehealth sessions using secure video conferencing. Evidence shows that many conditions can be successfully treated via virtual PT therapy sessions.

Physical Therapy can be a less expensive alternative to prescription drugs or surgery. Many conditions can be treated with our conservative approach to care. If surgery is required, physical therapy can assist you in preparing for surgery and returning to maximum function after surgery.

The Physical Therapy Institute believes in an interprofessional approach to care and will work closely with your physician and other healthcare providers to coordinate treatment. We work closely with the Family Medicine Clinic and the Student Wellness Center at the Midwestern University Multispecialty Clinic.

Our therapists are Board Certified in Orthopedics and have expertise with a large variety of diagnoses including:

  • Low back or neck pain

  • Muscle strains
  • Posture
  • Shoulder, elbow, or wrist pain

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) states 1 in 4 older adults reported falling in 2018 with more than 8 million requiring medical attention.

Our certified neurologic specialist and clinicians are equipped to treat dysfunction related to your fall risk and prevention. This risk can be reduced in several ways, including active discussion with your healthcare provider regarding health conditions and medications, as well as use of physical therapy to improve strength and balance reactions.

Temporomandibular joint dysfunction (TMD) is the name given to a group of problems that affect the jaw joint and the muscles that control jaw movement. Individuals with TMD often complain about pain when eating, sleeping or at rest, pain in or around the ear, locking of the jaw making it hard to open or close the mouth, general headaches or facial pain.

Treatment is individualized and may include pain reduction and symptom management, restoration of normal jaw motion, behavioral modifications, improved postural control, and prevention of symptom recurrence.

Other problems treated include chronic headaches and facial pain.

Many orthopedic, bowel, and bladder issues arise during pregnancy and after giving birth. The Physical Therapy Institute can treat these issues and devise an immediate postpartum plan for you prior to giving birth to assist with those first few weeks with a new baby. Body mechanics of childcare are also addressed. Sessions are available in-person or via telehealth to fit into a busy schedule.

People with vestibular disorders – inner ear dysfunction – frequently experience symptoms of vertigo or dizziness with changes in position of the head or with certain movement patterns. They may also experience symptoms of unsteadiness or even loss of balance during walking activities.

Part of a vestibular evaluation is performed with the use of specialized goggles that digitally record eye movements that may not be seen in room light. Vestibular rehab interventions may include particle repositioning maneuvers, gaze stabilization exercises to coordinate eye and head movements, neck exercises, visual motion sensitivity training, balance, and cardiovascular conditioning.

Patients who have recovered from the COVID-19 infection can experience continued symptoms of fatigue, weakness, deconditioning and poor endurance. At the Physical Therapy Institute, our therapists will assist in creating a safe effective exercise program to get you back to your previous level of health and fitness.

Physical therapy is available in-person at the Physical Therapy Institute or with telehealth using secure video conferencing. Evidence shows that many conditions can be successfully treated with this format, which allows for patients who cannot leave their homes or need flexibility to receive expert physical therapy care. Based on your specific needs, a combination of in-person and telehealth visits can also be utilized.
