Food safety is a major focus of One Health, the integrated study of human and animal healthcare. As part of their curriculum, students from the College of Veterinary Medicine have the opportunity to collaborate with faculty and students from other University healthcare programs to maximize their skill in the service of large animal and production medicine.
The 70,000 square foot Midwestern University Large Animal Clinic at the Midwestern University Animal Health Institute (AHI) is a center for veterinary education, research, large animal veterinary services, and pathology with hired faculty who are engaged in scientific discovery to benefit Arizona’s livestock producers and horse owners. Because Midwestern University is an educational institution, the University is able to provide veterinary services at an affordable price.
Veterinary students, under direct supervision of faculty veterinarians who are specialists in areas of large animal medicine, surgery, and reproduction, are involved with patient care, which adds tremendous value to the service as the brightest minds are contributing to the entire healthcare experience. Examples of services that are provided include general and specialty care of medical conditions in farm animals/livestock and horses/equids lameness exams, elective surgery, dental surgery, digital radiography and ultrasound, endoscopy, animal reproduction services, and general medical care.
Patient Information
Please read the following carefully for details on becoming a patient of the Large Animal Clinic, including what to expect, appointment guidelines and billing information.
The first step in becoming a patient of the Midwestern University Large Animal Clinic is to schedule an appointment by calling 623-806-7575.
Check in at the front desk at least 15 minutes prior to your appointment so we can process the necessary paperwork.
Once you’ve checked in, someone from our professional team of students, staff and faculty will escort you to an exam room and get to know you and your pet’s needs. They will obtain a thorough history and physical examination. We carefully examine and explain everything so there is a common understanding, which is why your assessment may take longer than normal. Remember, a supervising veterinarian will always oversee and approve everything that is recommended for your pet.
New patients, please arrive at least 15 minutes before your appointment time to complete new patient paperwork.
Existing patients, please arrive at least 10 minutes prior to your appointment to allow enough time to complete necessary registration procedures.
Cancelled Appointments
Appointments should be cancelled only when it is absolutely necessary.
We require 48 hours of notice for an appointment cancellation. Cancellations without appropriate advance notice will be considered as “no show” or missed appointments.
Additionally, patients who arrive more than 15 minutes late will be considered “no show” appointments and may have to reschedule. Please remember that your care will be delayed if you miss a scheduled appointment.
Patients who repeatedly fail to fulfill scheduled appointments will be dismissed from the Midwestern University Clinics.
Special Accommodations
Please advise us in advance if you have a special accommodation such as a hearing impairment or availability of a wheelchair.
Non-English-Speaking Patients
For the benefit of your understanding of the treatment provided, we encourage you to bring a translator with you to your appointment if you do not speak English.
Payment for Medical Services
Payment for office services are due at the time of service. Payments for prescriptions are due in full prior to placement of the order. If you are unable to pay for your services on the date of your appointment, we will be happy to reschedule your appointment. For your convenience, we accept:
- Cash

- Care Credit
For your convenience, we offer a financing option through care credit. Apply online at CareCredit or by calling 800-365-8295 prior to your appointment.
Non-Payment
The Animal Health Institute will attempt to make payment arrangements when necessary.
