Personalized Care for Jaw and Orofacial Pain

At the Midwestern University Dental Institute in Downers Grove, IL, our team provides comprehensive evaluation and personalized care for patients experiencing TMD and other orofacial pain conditions. Because symptoms can have multiple causes, a thorough evaluation is an important first step in determining the most appropriate diagnosis and therefore the right approach to care. Our dental faculty and students work together to understand your symptoms, identify contributing factors, and develop an individualized plan focused on improving comfort and jaw function.

What is TMD (TMJ disorder)?

Temporomandibular disorders (TMD) are conditions that affect the temporomandibular joints (TMJ), the muscles that control jaw movement, and the surrounding structures. Sometimes referred to as “TMJ disorders,” TMD can cause pain or discomfort in the jaw, face, head, or around the ears, making everyday activities such as eating, talking, sleeping, and even relaxing more difficult.

What are the symptoms of TMD?

TMD can affect people in different ways. You may benefit from an evaluation if you experience:

  • Pain or tenderness in the jaw
  • Pain when chewing, talking, or yawning
  • Clicking, popping, or other sounds when moving your jaw
  • Difficulty opening or closing your mouth
  • Jaw locking or catching
  • Facial pain or tenderness
  • Pain around or in front of the ears
  • Headaches that may be associated with jaw or facial pain
  • Jaw muscle fatigue or tightness
  • Changes in the way your teeth come together

How is TMD diagnosed and treated?

TMJ looks different from person to person, so your treatment should too. At the Midwestern University Dental Institute, your evaluation starts with a detailed look at your symptoms, a jaw and muscle exam, and the factors that may be contributing to your pain, so we can identify the type of orofacial pain you have. There is no single treatment that works for everyone with TMD, so your care plan is built around your symptoms, exam findings, and individual needs.

Treatment may focus on:

  • Reducing pain and managing symptoms
  • Improving jaw movement and function
  • Identifying and modifying habits that may contribute to symptoms
  • Supporting healthy jaw and oral function
  • Addressing factors that may contribute to recurring symptoms
  • Coordinating care with other healthcare professionals when appropriate

Our goal is to help you better understand your condition and develop a practical approach to managing your symptoms.
