Emergency Counseling Services - AZ

Emergency counseling services for the Glendale, AZ campus.

What To Do in a Crisis

If you are in danger or thinking of hurting yourself or someone else, Midwestern University counselors are available Monday through Friday during normal business hours to meet with students experiencing a crisis.  Walk-ins are welcome at the Counseling Center office suite located in the Barrel Four building, in the Student Counseling and Academic Resource Center; tell any staff member you are in crisis.  You can also call the Office of Student Services at 623-572-3210 for assistance in reaching a Student Counselor.

For acute mental health issues, students can contact our on-campus Student Counselors to make an appointment or contact MWU’s Student Acute Care Clinic, which is housed in the on-campus Multispecialty Clinic (MSC).

If a mental health crisis occurs during a time when the on-campus Student Counselors are unavailable, and it is after hours for the MSC, the University has contracted with Academic Live Care (ALC) for immediate and also more long-term assistance.

ALC is a confidential, online, 24/7/unlimited telehealth program that is free to students no matter where they are located in the United States.

For emergency and immediate crises, ALC offers “In The Moment” crisis counseling and assistance. For less immediate needs, ALC can also be used for urgent care, counseling/therapy, and psychiatric appointments.

Information regarding Student Counseling, the Acute Care Clinic, or ALC, is available through each student’s online Student Portal via their Student Resource Box under an icon labeled Academic Live Care.

Note: For emergency mental health needs a student should always consider calling 911 or 988, which is specifically for mental health-related crises. When a student is within Maricopa County and feels they or a fellow student needs to be evaluated for suicide or other severe mental health crises, the student can contact EMPACT, who will dispatch an evaluation team and will make an assessment as to the need for emergency services and even hospitalization. EMPACT is unique to Maricopa County and is at no cost, but the student should identify themselves as being part of Midwestern University when they first make the call. Again, all contact information is located through a student’s online Student Portal through their Student Counseling icon.
