The Next Generation of Sunscreen: What You Should Know About Bemotrizinol
FDA approved bemotrizinol in June 2026, the first new over the counter sunscreen ingredient in 27 years.
On June 9, 2026, the FDA approved a new sunscreen, bemotrizinol. It has been 27 years since the FDA approved an over the counter (OTC) sunscreen. This sunscreen has been used in Europe since 2000.
Bemotrizinol is a broad-spectrum chemical sunscreen, protecting against UVA and UVB rays. Unlike the other current OTC chemical sunscreens, bemotrizinol shows not to readily be absorbed into the bloodstream. This is the only chemical sunscreen in the US that is FDA reviewed as GRASE (generally recognized as safe and effective); mineral sunscreens (zinc and titanium dioxide) are also considered GRASE.
Bemotrizinol is shown to be lightweight, making it easy to apply, does not leave a white residue and is photostable, which allows it to last longer than other chemical sunscreens and is not rapidly degraded.
The exclusive brand with this sunscreen ingredient is Parsol® Shield, which will have marketing rights for 18 months. The expected roll-out of this product will be sometime between August/September this year. It is approved for use by those 6 months old and older.
